Surrogate Compensation and Benefits
Surrogate Alternatives has one of the best surrogate benefit packages in the industry. The professional surrogate benefit package, or the “SBP” which is how it’s often referred to, is a description and listing of the funds you will receive while acting as a gestational surrogate. So, how much does a surrogate make? How much does it pay to be a surrogate? We offer our 1st time surrogates up to $77,300 in compensation and experience for their help in the process. There is such a thing as a fair compensation for surrogacy in our industry but please be wary of other agencies claiming to offer $100,000 or more.
Often times surrogates sign with other agencies with the impression that they’ll receive the highest surrogate compensation and end up waiting months to get matched, only to be told they could only get them $30,000 – $40,000. They knew the surrogate was excited and just wanted to be matched and she was tired of waiting for her journey to begin. The saying “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is” is an accurate one when it comes to payment for surrogacy.

Pregnancy Compensation
You will be entitled to 10 equal monthly payments of pregnancy compensation. Payments begin after confirmation of a fetal heartbeat through ultrasound.
“Extra” Compensation for Twins or Triplets
This fee begins at the 18th week of pregnancy. If it is determined that you are carrying twins or triplets for your intended parents, you will receive extra money for the inconvenience.
Monthly Non-Accountable Expense Allowance
This monthly non-accountable allowance is paid to you the month following the finalization of legal contracts between you (the surrogate) and your intended parents. You are entitled to receive this allowance as long as you are under contract with your intended parents, and it extends for one month after you give birth.
IVF/Embryo Transfer Fee
You are entitled to this fee every time you have an embryo transfer for your intended parents. Hopefully it works on the first attempt, but in case it doesn’t, this fee will be paid again and will compensate you for lost wages and childcare, since most IVF clinics require you be on bed rest for 2-3 days following the embryo transfer procedure.
Legal Contract Execution Fee
This fee is paid to you once you have signed the legal contract with your Intended Parents and have returned the fully notarized contract to your attorney.
Maternity Clothing Allowance
This is a one-time fee as part of your surrogacy pay to purchase maternity clothing. If you become pregnant with Twins, this fee will increase by $200.
Attendance Fee for Monthly Support Meetings
SAI holds fun monthly support group meetings in person or by Zoom at our Southern California office. Meetings are on Tuesdays 9am & 12pm.
Housekeeping Allowance
This begins at the 13th week of pregnancy and continues throughout the pregnancy until you deliver. You are given a weekly stipend for this service.
IVF Physician Appointments
You will be entitled to receive this fee if you are employed full-time and have to miss work to attend an IVF appointment.
IVF Medical Clearance Fee
This fee is paid to you once the IVF clinic has cleared you to proceed and you have passed their medical screening process.
Cancelled Cycle Fee
This fee is paid to you only if you begin stimulation medication, and then through no fault of your own, the cycle is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
Mock Cycle Fee
This fee is paid to you if the IVF clinic requires a Mock Cycle to ensure your uterine lining gets to the thickness the clinic considers optimal for transfer.
Life Insurance
Our surrogates are able to apply for and can be reimbursed by their intended parents for obtaining a term life insurance policy.
Medical Insurance
If you or your spouse do not have medical insurance through your employer or his, or your insurance excludes surrogacy, SAI will help you apply for a surrogate friendly insurance policy. The amount of the monthly insurance premium will be reimbursed to you by your intended parents through an escrow or attorney-held trust account.
Physician Recommended C-section
If your OB doctor recommends you deliver by C-section, this fee will be paid to you. This fee covers the additional pain, suffering and recovery time that occurs with a C-section delivery. It also covers childcare and housekeeping during your postpartum period.
Physician Ordered Bedrest
If your doctor determines that they want you on bed rest due to the pregnancy, you will be entitled to this fee.
Supplying Breast Milk (optional)
After delivery, if you choose to pump breast milk for your surrogate baby or babies, you will be compensated a weekly amount for your time. You will also be reimbursed for any pumping supplies you purchase.
Invasive Procedure Fee
Unfortunately, things can happen in pregnancy that we have no control over. If you are required to have a DNC, fetal reduction, etc., you will be compensated for the inconvenience, pain and suffering.
Long Distance Travel
If your IVF clinic is located in a different city than where you live, you will be reimbursed for all of your travel costs. This includes, (if needed): airfare, mileage, car rental or Lyft/Uber rentals, hotel and a food per diem allowance.
Pregnancy Wellness Program
Surrogate Alternatives prides itself in offering our surrogates a unique health and wellness program that includes monthly acupuncture, massage, and high quality prenatal vitamins for a healthy and stress-free pregnancy. We encourage you to take advantage of this unique program!
Surrogate Retreat Weekends
This fee, paid by your intended parents, allows you to attend one of SAI’s annual retreat events (per calendar year), at no cost to you. SAI is one of a few agencies to host these types of events, and pamper our surrogates through luxurious get-away weekends, spa days, etc. Typically held in San Diego, Los Angeles, or Palm Springs, SAI hosts up to three (3) retreat events per year. Our staff, with much time, attention and love, create and make these events possible. Our goal is to provide our surrogates with a memorable day or weekend away, while still providing an atmosphere where you can bond and relax with your fellow surrogates.
Annual Family Events
We are so thankful for our surrogates and their families. In honor of our amazing surrogates and their supportive families, we hold an annual family event that includes fun activities for the kids, food, entertainment and raffle drawings. In 2013, SAI gave away a brand-new Mini Cooper to one of our lucky surrogates.
