There are so many life experiences and stories that bring us to the decision to become a surrogate. Every woman has a different list of reasons to be a surrogate mother, but there are a lot of recurring themes I have found when talking with other women who have been surrogates and I am listing them below along with some additional reasons of why I think this is the case. So… why be a surrogate mother?
1) Help a family receive a happy beginning.
“Not everyone can do surrogacy” is a quote you hear often in the world of surrogacy, but it doesn’t always refer to the difficulty in applying. It doesn’t refer to some high test scores you need to qualify, or the interview you will have with your agency. It refers to the special kind of person it takes to selflessly carry a baby for someone else. It’s a special type of person who feels joy and fulfillment at giving someone else they’re happy beginning at a family.
2) Discover a Community of Support
The community that rallies around a surrogate in the SAI family is authentic and truly there for you with every turn of your journey. I have personally developed friendships that have lasted for years, through the support and care of the surrogate community. It’s a life experience that few ever have, so the network of women who “get it” is invaluable. Finding your community, or your chosen family is where we develop safe spaces to grow. Who I have become as a person is in part because of the support and learning I gained from these women. It is not something I take lightly.
3) Financial freedom for your own family
Though not often talked about because it isn’t the main reason to be a surrogate mother, the compensation given to surrogates allows us to make financial decisions for our families that benefit us. Many are able to travel with their families, finish their college education, or buy a home or car. All of these become easier to achieve with the compensation given after delivery. When I had my first surrogate baby, I took my family to Disneyland. Sometimes we forget that our families are sacrificing for this journey as well, so a trip like that was affordable and easy to do after being compensated for my gift of birth. This became a tradition for us after every journey.
4) Be a part of something bigger
Have you ever been asked “What have you given to the world?” or “What are you most proud of?” That is a HARD question for many people. Some people go through their entire life struggling with the question of “Have I done anything with this life?” Surrogates rarely have trouble answering that question. We know we have given incredible good to the world, and that our change and our love ripples out from that act of goodness. To be confident in our answer of “Yes! I have given a LOT to this world” is a gift in an of its self. We become dimensional, that life experience creates in us a new and not often heard of, view to life and insight into a selflessness not usually seen.
5) Because every journey is different
I promise you that surrogacy is never boring. Each time I have come back to do a journey with SAI it has been a unique and different experience. So last but not least, if you are looking for a way to keep your life interesting, surrogacy is certainly not a subtle way to shake things up a bit.
