My name is Michelle Cowan and I am the Lead Case Manager here at Surrogate Alternatives. I have worked for SAI since October of 2014. Even though it is coming up on four years with the company I feel like I have worked here so much longer than that because Diana Olmeda, the Owner and CEO, is my cousin. I watched my cousin build this company from the bottom up, starting out of her home, then turning it into the amazing agency it is today. I watched her sacrifice so much to help others realize their dreams of becoming parents. It touched me, so once I was done having my own family, I signed up to become a surrogate myself and of course, I went with SAI. I started the surrogate process and delivered a beautiful baby boy in December of 2012.
My Intended parents were from Germany and after 7 miscarriages they decided to do IVF. Prior to our match, they had already suffered through two failed transfers and were beginning to wonder if they were ever going to have the baby they so longed for. Luckily, the third time was the charm! I got pregnant with a baby boy and my IP’s could not have been happier. I remember being at my heart beat ultrasound when the doctor told me we have one happy healthy heart beat; I was in tears I was so happy for my IP’s! It was such a long road for them; after all the stress, worry and tears they were finally getting the baby they had been fighting so hard for. That was the best feeling in the world!!!! I can’t even begin how to describe how good it felt to make them parents. Being a surrogate was definitely one of the top ten best things I have ever done in my life. To this day, my IP’s send me pictures and videos of their beautiful family. They wish me and my daughter Happy Birthday. We are part of one another’s families, and even though they are not in the US we still have a very close relationship.
The things I love about my job:
- Helping people build their families.
- Every day is different; new challenges, new people to meet and never a dull moment!
- I love planning SAI’s special events and coming up with new and exciting ways to show our appreciation for everything that our Surrogates and their IP’s go through to reach their dreams of having a family of their own.
- I am constantly learning and trying new things. The work never gets stale.
I enjoy challenging myself with electronic jigsaw puzzles on my IPad. I love to play the Sims. I cry at some point during almost every movie I watch. One of my favorite snacks – cheddar cheese and peanut butter! I am a Pepsi addict and would take an ice-cold Pepsi over an alcoholic beverage any day of the week. My happy place is Chipotle’s, and I love the smell of freshly cut grass!
